Why is selenium important for lung health?

Glutathione peroxidase, the enzyme that uses glutathione to neutralise hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, is a selenoenzyme — it requires selenium at its active site. Without adequate selenium, the glutathione antioxidant system cannot function properly regardless of glutathione levels. Lung tissue faces high oxidative burden, making this system particularly relevant there.

The enzyme connection

Selenium's importance in this context is not vague or general. It is structural.

Glutathione peroxidase is the enzyme that uses glutathione to reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides to harmless products. It is a selenoenzyme, meaning selenium in the form of selenocysteine sits at its catalytic site.

Without adequate selenium, the enzyme cannot be produced in sufficient quantity or cannot function. You can have abundant glutathione and still have impaired antioxidant defence, because the tool that uses it is missing a component.

Selenium is also required by thioredoxin reductase, another antioxidant enzyme system, and by the deiodinase enzymes that convert thyroid hormone T4 to active T3.

Why lungs care

Lung tissue faces the highest oxygen tension of any organ, and correspondingly high production of reactive oxygen species. The glutathione system is its primary defence, and glutathione peroxidase is central to that system.

Lower selenium status has been examined in relation to respiratory outcomes in observational studies, with some associations reported. As always with observational nutritional data, confounding is substantial and these findings are suggestive rather than definitive.

The mechanistic case — that an enzyme requiring selenium cannot work without it — is considerably firmer than the clinical outcome data.

How much and from where

Recommended intakes for adults sit around 55 micrograms daily in most guidance, with an upper limit commonly set at 400 micrograms.

That gap between recommended and upper limit is narrower than for most nutrients, and it is the main practical point about selenium: the window between insufficient and excessive is not wide.

  • Brazil nuts are exceptionally dense — a single nut can contain 50 to 90 micrograms depending on where it was grown. Two or three can meet or exceed daily requirements, and a large handful daily can approach excessive intake. This is one of very few foods where portion genuinely matters for a micronutrient.
  • Seafood — tuna, sardines, prawns.
  • Organ meats, particularly kidney.
  • Eggs, poultry and meat.
  • Whole grains and seeds, with content depending heavily on soil.

Soil selenium content varies enormously by region. Some areas have selenium-rich soil and populations with high intake; others are markedly deficient. This means dietary adequacy depends substantially on where your food was grown, which is unusual among minerals.

Deficiency and excess

Deficiency is uncommon in most developed countries but occurs, particularly in regions with low soil selenium, and in people with malabsorption or on long-term parenteral nutrition. Severe deficiency has been associated with a specific cardiomyopathy in selenium-poor regions.

Excess — selenosis — produces a garlic odour on the breath, brittle hair and nails, hair loss, gastrointestinal upset, fatigue and irritability. It is genuinely achievable through over-supplementation, which is why the narrow window matters.

There has also been research examining high selenium intake and diabetes risk, adding a reason not to assume more is better.

Practical position

Selenium is a case where food-based adequacy is straightforward and supplementation is rarely necessary. A few Brazil nuts weekly, or regular seafood, covers requirements in most people.

If you supplement, keep intakes moderate and account for what your diet already provides. Selenium is not a nutrient where a larger dose is a safer bet.
