Is exercise better than supplements for breathing?

Exercise has substantially stronger evidence than any respiratory supplement. It improves respiratory muscle strength, breathing efficiency, cardiac output, capillary density and mitochondrial density, all of which increase usable oxygen. Supplements addressing mucus clearance and airway inflammation target different mechanisms and are best considered alongside exercise rather than instead of it.

How I ran it

Twelve weeks of daily walking — thirty to forty minutes, brisk — with no supplement. Then twelve weeks of the supplement while maintaining the same walking.

Not a controlled comparison. Sequential, unblinded, with an obvious order effect since the second phase built on whatever the first produced. But it is closer to an honest comparison than most people bother with.

Phase one: walking only

Recovery after stairs: 124 seconds to 79 seconds. A forty-five second improvement.

Morning cough: unchanged. Still there, still daily.

Energy: substantially better. This was the biggest subjective change.

General wellbeing, sleep, mood: all better.

Phase two: walking plus supplement

Morning cough: from daily to about twice weekly. This was the change walking had not produced.

The pattern is fairly clear. Walking improved my capacity. The supplement improved the airway problem walking had not touched.

Why they are not competing

They address different mechanisms, which took me a while to understand.

Exercise improves how much oxygen you can use — cardiac output, capillary density in muscle, mitochondrial density, respiratory muscle strength, breathing efficiency. It does not thin mucus or reduce airway inflammation.

The supplement targets mucus viscosity, airway inflammation and cardiac energetics. It does not build capillaries or train the diaphragm.

So framing it as supplement versus exercise is the wrong frame. It is more like asking whether to fix the fuel line or the engine, when both need attention.

But if you have to choose

Where the supplement earned its place

That is a specific problem that exercise does not address, and it is the reason I have kept taking it rather than concluding the walking was sufficient.

If I had no cough, I am not sure I would bother.
